A fully custom fence design near the water, built to hold its own against the view.
This Larchmont backyard sits close enough to the water that the fence needed to do more than mark a property line — it needed to hold its own against the view. We built it with full 6x6 posts and a fully custom panel design that alternates between horizontal wood sections and corrugated metal panels, so the fence reads as a deliberate design element instead of a standard privacy run. Mixing corrugated roofing panels with 2x2 horizontal wood slats gives it a layered, textured look you do not get from a single material run top to bottom.
Finish mattered as much as structure here. We used a Sherwin-Williams paint with Rain Clean technology, which lets rain rinse dirt and pollen off the surface instead of letting it bake in, so the fence keeps looking freshly installed with a lot less upkeep than a standard stain. The custom gate carries the same attention to detail — built from varying board widths instead of a uniform picket pattern, it reads as its own feature rather than just an opening in the fence line.
The homeowners paired the fence with a fully landscaped garden bed running its entire length, complete with LED accent lighting woven through the plantings. At night, the lights wash up against the dark panels and give the whole backyard a warm, finished feel instead of going dark the moment the sun sets — proof that a fence project is as much about the space it creates as the material it is built from.
