A custom wood fence enclosing a raised deck and paver patio, with picket-style spindle balusters matching the deck railing above.

This townhome in the Greenbrier East neighborhood, part of the Greenbrier Fairways community near Greenbrier Mall, needed a fence that could do double duty: enclose a raised deck and paver patio combination while tying visually into the deck railing already installed above. We built the fence with the same picket-style spindle balusters as the deck rail, so the two structures read as one continuous design instead of two mismatched projects stacked on top of each other.
Greenbrier East is a tightly-packed, mostly-townhome community built in the 1980s and 90s, and lots here sit close to their neighbors. A privacy fence in a neighborhood like this has to work harder than one on a spacious lot — it needs to define the outdoor living space clearly and give the household real privacy from the homes on either side, without feeling like a wall. The lower solid-board section handles that privacy, while the picket-style spindle top rail, matched to the deck above, keeps the whole structure from feeling closed-in.
The fence wraps the paver patio below the deck and includes a gate sized for everyday access in and out of the yard. Built from pressure-treated pine, it was sized and detailed to match the existing deck railing's spindle spacing so the two elements look like they were designed together, not built years apart.
The fence's top rail matches the spindle balusters on the deck railing above, so the two structures read as one cohesive design.
The fence encloses a paver patio beneath a raised deck, not a simple straight property-line run, so layout and gate placement took real planning.
Greenbrier East's close-set townhome lots meant privacy and clean sightlines mattered as much as the fence's structure.
Built from pressure-treated pine for durability against Hampton Roads humidity, sized to match the existing deck railing above.
