A custom horizontal-slat privacy fence built from varying board widths, in the Lake Shores neighborhood on Little Creek Reservoir.

This backyard sits in the Lake Shores neighborhood of Virginia Beach, on Little Creek Reservoir, and called for something more distinctive than a standard board-on-board privacy run. We built a custom horizontal-slat fence from varying widths of dimensional lumber, alternating wide and narrow boards down the line for a layered, textured look you do not get from a uniform picket fence.
Lake Shores is an established Virginia Beach neighborhood of mid-century ranch homes on mature, wooded lots, tucked between Shore Drive and Chic's Beach and bordering Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. The mature tree cover and older lot lines meant this fence had to work with a yard that was never laid out on a clean grid, and the alternating-width slat design gave us the flexibility to make that work without the fence looking like an afterthought.
Every board is pressure-treated southern yellow pine, finished with the Sherwin-Williams WoodScapes stain and sealer line to protect the wood against the humidity and salt air this close to the reservoir, while still keeping the natural grain visible instead of covering it over.
