A shadowbox-style pressure-treated wood privacy and pool-safety fence built around a rural property near the Great Dismal Swamp.
This property sits in the Deep Creek area of South Chesapeake, close to the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge — a rural, wooded stretch of the city with open-field lots that look nothing like the tightly-packed subdivisions closer to the water. With a new in-ground pool going in, the fence had to do more than mark a property line: it needed to meet pool-safety code while still giving the yard real privacy against a mostly open, tree-lined backdrop.
We built a shadowbox-style pressure-treated wood fence around the full pool and patio area, with the gate hardware sized and installed to meet Virginia's pool-barrier requirements — self-closing, self-latching, and swinging away from the pool. Because the lot is rural and open rather than hemmed in by neighboring structures, the fence run was longer than a typical suburban backyard job, wrapping a much larger perimeter around the pool equipment pad, patio and pool itself.
It is a good example of how differently the same material can get used depending on the lot. A shadowbox privacy fence on a dense townhome street is mostly about blocking a close neighbor's view; out here near Deep Creek, the same fence style is doing pool-safety duty first, with privacy from the open field and tree line as a secondary benefit.
