Matching a composite deck to an existing privacy fence in a Norfolk city backyard.
This Freemason project called for a deck that would fit into an already-established Norfolk city backyard, matching an existing privacy fence rather than starting from a blank slate. We laid the composite decking in a diagonal pattern with a picture-frame border around the edge, a detail that adds visual interest and a finished look without changing the deck's footprint. Built-in planter boxes give the space a layer of greenery, with room for flowers or a small herb garden right at the edge of the deck. Storage and access doors were built out of matching composite material so they blend into the deck instead of standing out as an obvious add-on. In a tighter city lot, details like these make the difference between a deck that looks tacked on and one that looks like it was always part of the house.
