Smithfield, VA
A sloped backyard reshaped into usable outdoor living space.

Sloped lots are one of the harder problems in deck design, and this Gatling Pointe backyard in Smithfield had a steep one. Rather than fight the grade, we built around it: wide landings break up the run of stairs at regular intervals, giving people a place to stop, turn or set a drink down instead of navigating one long, awkward staircase. A custom triangular pergola was shaped to fit the angled property line exactly, adding shade without eating into the usable yard space. Hanging planters bring color in at eye level along the way. What used to be a hillside that was hard to use is now a series of connected, walkable outdoor spaces from the top of the yard to the bottom.
