Framing

Framing is the part of the project nobody sees once it's finished, but it's the part that determines whether everything built on top of it lasts. We handle structural framing for decks, porches, additions and outdoor structures using proper post spacing, joist sizing and hardware for the load and the span, not shortcuts that only get discovered years later.

Good framing is what keeps a deck from bouncing, a porch roof from sagging, and a structure standing up to coastal storms.

It's the first thing we build and the thing we're most careful about getting right.

We size joists, beams and posts to the actual load and span of your project using proper engineering tables, not rules of thumb, and we use structural screws and joist hangers rated for exterior use rather than standard deck screws that can work loose over time. Footings get dug to the frost depth and inspected before any concrete goes in, and post bases are set to keep wood from sitting directly in standing water. For elevated or multi-story decks, we pay particular attention to ledger board attachment and flashing, since that connection point is one of the most common failure points on decks that weren't framed correctly the first time. It's not glamorous work, but it's the work that determines whether a deck is still solid in fifteen years.
